English for Speakers of Other Languages – ESOL

ESOL

ESOL courses are for people whose first language is not English. These courses aim to improve your speaking, reading and writing of English. We have courses for each ESOL level, from the entry levels to advanced level 2, which is the equivalent to GCSE or Cambridge Advanced level. Before starting any of these courses, you will be assessed here at the Global Skills Centre to accurately determine your level of English.

These are different levels that you can study for:

  • First Steps in English - Entry Level 1 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life
  • Moving on in English - Entry Level 2 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life
  • Performing in English - Entry Level 3 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life
  • Level 1 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life - Foundation equivalent
  • Level 2 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life - GCSE level equivalent
  • Performing in English - Entry Level 3 Certificate in ESOL for Work
  • Level 1 Certificate in ESOL for Work - Foundation equivalent

Citizenship is included in all our Entry Level 2 and Entry Level 3 ESOL classes.

Syllabus structure

All learners will have their own negotiated learning plan, which will also be used to record and review their progress.

The courses have been designed so that there is a mixture of group work (with classmates), and individual work, with support from your tutor.

During lessons, you will take part in a variety of activities including conversation, role play, discussions, watching videos, listening to CDs, ‘pairwork’ and ‘groupwork’ and you will also be using Information Technology. The courses contents include topics that are familiar and relevant to you, and daily life in the UK. These topics will include: personal details and experiences, work, education and training, housing, family and friends, transport, weather, the buying of goods, leisure, and UK society and culture, etc.

You will also have regular reviews to monitor your progress.
